My Friend Irwin

Irwin Vinegar was my Jewish friend when I was young and on Saturdays we walked to his synagogue, the Schara Tzedeck, with him and his brother Larry.  It is the largest Orthodox Jew synagogue in Vancouver.   Irwin was my first friend who was true to his beliefs, something I was unfamiliar with back then. Irwin was a good boy.  He had curly brown hair and plopped in the midst of his waves was his kippah. I have tried to find Irwin but to no avail.  Irwin must be a non social media man because I cannot find much of a trail except for one post about his son.   Masel Tov to Joseph who had his Bar Mitzvah last summer and read from the Torah so beautifully.   Irwin’s orthodox Jewish legacy moves on.

Hello Mrs. Tara. I was very pleasantly surprised to find this post – both the early years of my father, and (l’havdil) my photo.
Thank you for writing this. Like too many sons, I’ve asked him a lot of things, but not asked as much about when my father was younger. It’s very nice to find this.
My father, to take the words of one Rabbi there, has become a beating heart of Vancouver’s Orthodox Jewish community.
We have lost my grandfather recently, Barney, so I don’t know when is the right time, but if I could reach you privately, I’d be more than happy to help you contact him. Wishing the best.
P.S. If it might make you laugh, I’ve also since grown a beard.
